NYC DOE Student Enrollment
ENROLL IN ELEMENTARY OR MIDDLE SCHOOL
Most students in kindergarten through eighth grade attend their zoned school, if they have one. To find out if your NYC home address has a zoned school, call 311 or use the Find a School button and type in your home address:
If you have a zoned school, contact that school directly to register.
If you don't have a zoned school or would like to explore other options, visit a Family Welcome Center to register for school—find locations and hours at the link below:
- EarlyLearn NYC is free or low-cost child care and education provided through the Administration for Children's Services for children from six weeks to four years old. If you qualify, your child can begin a program any time during the year.
- 3-K
- You can apply to free, full-day 3-K programs the year your child turns three.
- Pre-K
- Apply to pre-K programs the year your child turns four, even if they are already a 3-K student. All four-year-old NYC residents are guaranteed a free, full-day pre-K placement.
- Kindergarten
- Apply to kindergarten the year your child turns five, even if they are already a pre-K student. New to NYC public schools? Enroll your child in elementary school anytime during the year.
- Gifted and Talented
- If your child is entering kindergarten through third grade in 2020, they can register to take the G&T test this fall. Students with qualifying scores can then apply to G&T programs.
Lunch Program
FREE MEALS FOR ALL
All NYC public school students can enjoy free breakfast and lunch at school. You do not need to apply for your child to receive those meals.
However, we do ask families to complete a School Meals form so that schools can receive the right amount of funding for the program. Please complete the online form. We will also send a copy of the form home with your child, or you can get it from your school’s main office.
SPREAD THE WORD
Please join us in spreading the word that breakfast and lunch are free for all NYC public school students every day. We hope your child will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and come enjoy a healthy meal with us.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU TODAY?
Our monthly menus offer a variety of healthy, great-tasting, and creative food choices. We make sure that K–12 students can choose from a variety of smart options, such as:
Whole grain cereals and breads
A variety of vegetables
Assorted fruits
Fresh salads
Low-fat and fat-free milk
Our goal is to always provide nutrient-rich options that students of all ages and backgrounds will love. Our meals maintain high nutrition standards which meet and many times exceed USDA standards for school meals. We do not use food additives such as artificial colors or flavors, non-nutritious sweeteners, or preservatives. Additionally, we restrict high fructose corn syrup when we can. Our menus and water services are created to make sure that students get the nutrients they need to think clearly and concentrate on learning.
Seeing students succeed in school is what drives our passion to serve high-quality meals every day. Contact us with questions or concerns about school food.
