Principal's Message

August, 2022
Dear PS 36 Parents & Families:
I am honored and excited to introduce myself as the newly appointed Principal of PS 36 – The Saint Albans School!! I hope this message finds you, and yours, in the best of health and enjoying the summer break! I would first begin by thanking Assistant Principal Haigler for her leadership and service to the PS 36 community and for ensuring a smooth and productive transition. I am looking forward to working with AP Haigler as we continue the legacy of excellence that has been established here at PS 36.
I have had the honor and privilege of serving students, families and school communities within the DOE for over 18 years. I have held many roles including classroom teacher, mentor/coach, Dean & Educational Administrator for two (2) Children’s First Networks and most recently, I served the students and families as Principal in Harlem’s District 5. In my role as Principal and Assistant Principal (for which I served for 8 years), I led and supervised teachers in grades Prek-5th and Grades 6-8. I am a proud product of NYC public school, having graduated from Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens. I have earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Queens College (NY), an Advanced Certificate in Educational Administration/School Building Leader from The College of St. Rose (Albany/NYC) & acquired a plethora of skills training through development conferences, leadership development and organizational training within the New York City Department of Education. I am an alumni of the Assistant Principal Leadership Institute (APLI) within the Department of Education and also served as a Faculty Advisor for the 2020-2021 cohort.
As a leader, I want you to know that I LOVE my job. I also want you to know that I am passionate about our young people and that is why it is important to me that everyone who steps through our doors are excited to be here! It is my expectation and goal to ensure that every student leaves PS 36 -The Saint Albans School, having received robust, meaningful, and equitable learning experiences that are impactful beyond their school years. I want our young people to realize & understand their role as contributors to their community, society and world. We know that the success of all children is dependent upon the quality of their educational experiences and the individuals who stand before them.
My belief is that “children/students come first all the time, no matter what”. I am committed to always exploring new ways to meet the needs of all our students. Along with the teachers and staff, I am excited for the opportunity to build strong relationships with our parents and families, with our beautiful and brilliant students, and with our community partners. Because the relationships between families and the school are critical to the success of our students, I encourage you to become involved in every way possible. Please know that my door is always open to you. I look forward to partnering with you throughout this year and am excited for what’s to come!
All the Best,
Joi Bonner, Principal
